snub

We’re in gym class.
You’re standing there,
trying not to look too eager,
but you’ve got that look.
The one that says, Pick me.
The captains are choosing.
One, then the other.
Names called like lottery tickets.
Not yours.
The numbers dwindle,
the choices get thinner,
and you’re still there,
suddenly too aware of your hands,
your shoes,
your whole stupid self.
Snub is that moment they look past you.
A glance that doesn’t land.
It’s almost being seen.
But not quite.
