childhood

“What I remember most”?

“Well, let’s see…”

The constants, like Dad coming home from work right at 6 ‘clock.

Mom making dinner, tucking us in bed, and then working late into the night.

The unexpected, like the time I broke my collarbone flying off a merry-go-round.

The day my Grandma died after I tucked her in bed the night before.

The “firsts,” like that kiss by the window one afternoon after school.

My red and white bike rolling down the hill faster than anyone could catch me.

The “lasts,” like the night in May 20-something years ago, when I last saw most of my graduating class.

The day before my next birthday.

The highs, like getting the record deal offer and driving too fast while screaming at the top of my lungs.

The camaraderie of creating something from nothing together.

The lows, like learning that best friends aren’t always forever.

And a first love won’t always be your last love.

I remember loyalty, love, loss, hope, optimism, freedom, and possibility.

Childhood.

1980 something.

Daily Writing Tip

Write your memories.

  • Use memories as color.

  • Use memories as a contrast.
